Hoon Leng Yie

Towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, the political and socioeconomic conditions were undesirable and it was tough to make a living. This period also coincided with the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution where western colonial powers went around the world pillaging resources from their colonies and opening new markets for their goods. Many parts of Southeast Asia were colonies of the western countries and the high demand for manpower led to many Chinese coming to Southeast Asia to work and to search for a better life. However, the colonial government at that time was more concerned over getting cheap labour than the welfare of the migrant population. Thus, Chinese immigrants decided to organised themselves either by blood ties or by geographical location to take care of one another. The religious beliefs of early Chinese immigrants were an extension of their beliefs in China and places of worship often became a centre for everyone to keep in touch with one another. Early Toh clansman who migrated to Singapore also kept in touch with one another though this means. About 90 years ago, a successful fellow clansman by the name of Ke He (克盒) decided to donate a building to serve as a place of worship and also for his fellow clansman to keep in touch. This building which is currently located at 116 Keng Lee Road became Yun Long Yuan and housed several deities such as Qing Shu Zu Shi (清水祖师) and Zhuo Fu San Wei Da Ren (卓府三位大人).

In 1984, as the building of Hoon Leng Yie was old, a group of Toh’s clansmen discussed to  seek approval from the authorities to be registered as a non-profit organisation. This was approved on 18 Aug 1984 and Hoon Leng Yie became known as Hoon Leng Yie  (Temple) Pte Ltd. This paved the way for the redevelopment and conservation of the temple which was in danger of disrepair. After a lengthy discussion, redevelopment works finally commenced on 10 Apr 1990 and was completed on 15 Oct of the same year. An opening ceremony was held on 1 Dec of the same year (fifteen day in Oct of the Lunar Calendar). This was a dream come true for many of the Association members and the fund raising efforts received tremendous support from many quarters. The Hoon Leng Yie fund was also started with $200,000 that was left after deducting all related expenses for the redevelopment of the temple. After deducting all the expenses from the fund for the redevelopment, the balance amount of $200,000 was used to start off as Hoon Leng Yie fund. The newly renovated Hoon Leng Yie Temple became a place where fellow clansmen keep in touch. Gatherings are often held on the 2nd and 16th day of every month of the Lunar Calendar where they will engage in discussions about various matters relating to the Association besides having a meal together and worshipping the deities. With a strong financial foundation, Hoon Leng Yie Temple is now able to give out bursaries yearly to needy students and this go a long way in the promotion of education.
